Dardanelles Memorial Window, Greenock

Remembrance Sunday 2022.

This is part of the beautiful and haunting Dardanelles Memorial Window in the McLean Museum (Watt Institution), Greenock (Kelly Street).

It was installed to recognise Inverclyde's involvement and sacrifice in the Dardanelles Campaign in World War I.  It was made by local stained glass artist Alex Galloway and installed in 2018.

It shows the SS River Clyde at Gallipoli and also has the town crests of Greenock, Port Glasgow and Gourock.  (SS River Clyde was built in 1905 by Russell & Co, Port Glasgow.)

Port Glasgow Coat of Arms

It is a beautiful and evocative piece and a fitting memorial to those local men who fought and died that we might enjoy the freedoms that we have today.

Gourock Coat of Arms

The window is also a fitting celebration of our proud shipbuilding heritage.
