My 3xg ...I've thoroughly enjoyed this article. My 3xg grandfather lived in Greenock at least from 1815, and is variously referred to as mariner/seaman/rigger/RN/MS/Greenwich Pensioner. I've never been able to find any documents as regards his B/M/D so he is one of my major brick walls. I've also not been able to find out if he was a "local" seaman, or if he sailed the high seas. Very frustrating. But now, after reading your article and looking at the wonderful picture, I get a totally different idea of what a very busy and fascinating town Greenock must have been. (I've estimated that my 3xg grandfather could have been born in the mid 1790s and died between the 1841 & 1851 Censuses??). Many thanks for a great article. RoseRose McArthurnoreply@blogger.com
