It has some wonderful architectural details.
I wonder if the school bell was rung from here.
It was still a primary school up until the 1970s. It was later used as a centre for people with
special needs.
Wonder what the local authority intend to do with it? Hopefully it won't be demolished like so many
of Greenock's wonderful old buildings.

A stately old building. I am sure there would be outrage if the authorities tried to demolish it. Happy New Year and I look forward to seeing more next year from your neck of the woods.
ReplyDeleteIt would be a shame to see it demolished!
ReplyDeleteThere have been some wonderful renovations done to old schools into apartments. Those wide hallways and stairways could even been used as rooms! (I've toured through one school where the apartment I loved best was in the stairwell!)
ReplyDeleteIndeed! This splendid building should be saved!
ReplyDeleteI went to this great school from feb '56 - feb '62. I moved away from the area to the North East of Scotland in Dec '97. I heard this year(2014), it was going to be demolished. Hope Inverclyde Council reconsider.
ReplyDeleteIt is being demolished now sadly what a crime does no one in this council have any sense of heritage.
ReplyDeleteI went to this school from 62 to 69 l was a pupil and the jannies helper and received 5/- a week from him l now have a block of stone from the school in my back garden as a momento shame the school is now gone but not fogotten.
DeleteIt is now gone I was a pupil there till 1972 stll have nightmares about mrs king lol
ReplyDeleteHa ha - me too! Until '72, I was in Mrs King's class too! - I just remember an Arthur. We moved back to England. Yes she was a tough teacher with the strap I recall. I lost the one school photo I had of our class. Do you have any? All the best, Simon Mclennan
DeleteAs a child I lived in Drumfrochar Road and attended Mearns Street and then the HIgh School before being uprooted and moved to England at 12.5. I was looking on Google Maps and realised both schools have gone. Last time I looked it was still there. It is disgusting that the school has been demolished. My Father worked at the Westburn sugar refinery before going to IBM and then to ICI in Slough in 1960.
ReplyDeleteIwent to this school in 1956 great school David McIntosh perth australia
